Our Walking Tour in Dusseldorf

Embark on a fascinating Walking Tour in Dusseldorf. Every step from our Free Tour or Privat Tour will connect you with the rich history, vibrant culture and deep-rooted traditions of this charming city. This Walking Tour offers you a complete immersion into what makes Dusseldorf a unique destination in Germany.

We begin our tour in the iconic Altstadt, Dusseldorf’s old town, famous around the world for being home to the “world’s longest bar”. This area is not only known for its high concentration of free bars and breweries, but also for being the birthplace of Altbier, Dusseldorf’s traditional beer. With its mild, slightly bitter taste, Altbier is a dark, high-temperature fermented beer that has been an integral part of the local culture for centuries. As we walk through the cobbled streets, you will have the opportunity to enjoy this authentic beer in one of the historic pubs that line the narrow lanes.

Not far from there, we invite you to drink Killepitsch, a dark herbal liqueur that is as much a part of Dusseldorf’s identity as its famous Altbier. Brewed with over 90 ingredients, Killepitsch has an intense and complex flavour and is an excellent example of local traditions that have survived to the present day.

Continuing our walk through the old town, you will come across St. Lambert’s Church, famous for its distinctive leaning tower, and the Stadterhebungsmonument, a monument commemorating the Battle of Worringen in 1288, a key event that marked the birth of Dusseldorf as a city. This monument is an artistic expression of the city’s bravery and history, and an ideal place to reflect on Dusseldorf’s heroic past.

On the free walk you will also visit the equestrian statue of Jan Wellem, a ruler who played a decisive role in the transformation of Dusseldorf into a European cultural centre in the 17th century. Nearby is the birthplace of Heinrich Heine, the celebrated poet and writer whose work continues to resonate in German and world literature. Heine’s life and work are deeply intertwined with Dusseldorf’s history, and you will learn more about his legacy as you see the places that inspired his creativity.

As we approach Rheinuferpromenade, you’ll enjoy a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Rhine, with panoramic views of the Media Harbour in the distance, a symbol of Dusseldorf’s modern renaissance. Although we will not approach this area directly, we will tell you how it has evolved from a former industrial port to a vibrant centre of business and contemporary culture

During the tour we will mention the famous Königsallee (“Kö”), the most luxurious shopping street in this part of Germany. On the Kö you will discover its importance as the epicentre of fashion and luxury, a place where haute couture boutiques and exclusive stores set the pace for Dusseldorf’s urban sophistication

Finally, we will talk briefly about the city’s dark history, including Peter Kürten, known as the “Vampire of Dusseldorf”. While this is not a tribute, it is important to learn about all aspects of Dusseldorf’s history, including the most gruesome and disturbing.

Our free tours and private tours ends near the Rhine, where we invite you to enjoy an Altbier in one of the many beer gardens around the old town. This is the perfect time to relax and reflect on the history and stories we have discovered on this unforgettable Walking Tour in Dusseldorf.
